About this deal

Disclaimer: I do not consider myself an Abroad in Japan fan. I am aware of his content and have watched a few of his videos, but this review is written from a neutral perspective) I've been following Chris's Abroad in Japan Youtube channel for years. I've enjoyed watching the channel grow from simple videos of him teaching English swearwords to Japanese people, to full on professional documentaries about Fukushima. Natsuki Aso ( 阿蘓 夏樹, Aso Natsuki ) – presenter, amateur musician and owner of a beauty salon in Yamagata, Japan What I particularly enjoyed is a new perspective on Japan. I haven't read much travel writing so I haven't got much to compare this book to but I felt as though a large portion of the book was focusing more on the people Chris had met which I loved.

The hilarious and insightful memoir of a Brit trying assimilate into life in Japan. Over ten years we follow Chris Broad as he unravels the wonders and eccentricities of one of the world's most mysterious cultures, rising from underqualified English teacher to YouTube sensation in the process. Loved hearing about Chris' journey across Japan. Found it enjoyable to read about his first three years teaching at a high school located in the north of Japan, and his struggles with trying to learn Japanese. I really enjoyed this small peek into his life in Japan. The book was so well-written, the story so well-told, that I never wanted the story to end. What I find most fun was his story on how he met Natsuki, something that I have wanted to know for a long time! It was so crazy, but yet so Natsuki like how he introduced himself so I just had to laugh. Is so precious, sweet and funny. Jesus Christ... Saca la cabeza del culo, amigo. EXISTEN OTROS PAÍSES CON SUS PROPIOS IDIOMAS QUE NO SON EL INGLÉS.Te dejo tiempo para asimilarlo. From wide-eyed exchange teacher to seasoned youtuber, Chris Broad explores Japan in all its quirky glory, surviving earthquakes, North Korean missile alerts, cat cafe allergies and Love Hotel evictions. Endlessly fascinating! Will Ferguson, author of Hokkaido Highway Blues On 29 August 2017, Broad was visiting a town in Aomori Prefecture near the Shirakami-Sanchi wilderness area when he was woken up by the J-Alert being triggered by the North Korean August 2017 missile launch over Japan. He posted a video about how rude it was that they would carry out their test so early in the morning and proceeded to criticize the regime of Kim Jong-un, as well as foreigners who visit North Korea. The video was featured as "Trending" the day it was posted. [14] It then went on to attract national attention in Japan, with Broad being selected to represent the word "J-Alert" in Japan's annual Words of the Year event. [15] Chris has a way with writing that transported me to Japan. He can across as authentic with a good sense of humour. I particularly enjoyed the early years in Japan when he was finding his footing at the school and learning the culture, language, and making connections.

He also writes about Japanese culture, different places, people, natural disasters, and it wouldn't be Chris Broad if he didn't bring up food. He could easily start a side career as a food critic. McDonald's Japan's chocolate covered fries: 'it works' – video review". The Guardian. 28 January 2016. Archived from the original on 22 January 2021 . Retrieved 3 December 2020. A note about the writing style: Chris writes the way he talks. This makes sense since he's spent the last decade writing scripts, not books. When you are reading you'll hear the entire thing as though he's narrating it. I didn't mind this, although some areas of the books read like a video script, and could use some polish. I found the book far too easy to put down to rate it higher than 3/5. That being said, should he write another I will undoubtedly buy and read that too.

Journey Across Japan". Tokyo Creative. 2018. Archived from the original on 25 November 2020 . Retrieved 3 December 2020.I gave this one 3/5 stars. For me, that’s a solidly average rating. Chris Broad’s experiences are far from average, I just did not find the book as engaging as I think it could’ve been. I have been watching Chris’ content and listening to his podcast since 2020 and genuinely enjoy what he has come out with. Tessa Randello (9 June 2018).
