About this deal

The ancient solar cross is often discovered in Bronze-age burial urns. Although a part of numerous cultures, the solar cross eventually became a part of Christianity and was associated with the crucifix. Helpful. I have to admit I enjoyed reading Keep Your Greek more. This book is a solid work for someone who is especially just starting out with Greek. It lays some necessary foundational work which sadly is neglected in elementary Greek classes. When I finished Greek 1&2 many years ago I was never told what to do next. Thankfully Greek for Life and Keep Your Greek help chart a way forward. There are a number of descriptions of Gorgons in ancient Greek literature, each one different from the rest. However, in the early forms of Greek literature, the Gorgons symbol was associated with any of the three sisters whose hair was made of scary, venomous snakes and who had a terrifying expression. Joining a community of like-minded individuals is always a great way to grow together while never being alone. This sense of community is always helpful when you’re away from home and don’t have people to rely on! According to Greek mythology, the Labyrinth was designed by the legendary artificer, Daedalus, and consisted of a complex confusing structure that was built especially for King Minos of Crete at Knossos.

So why even give it 3 stars? I will say, that the materials they recommend in the middle of the book make for a good resource list (all more helpful than this book itself), and reading the book did indeed accomplish the goal of getting me fired up for my Greek. Aside from my reservations, I could see myself, with caveats, still recommending the book to new students of Greek. The solar cross symbol resembles the famous four-armed cross. Not only does it represent the sun, but it is also a portrayal of the repetitive nature of the four seasons and the four elements of nature. The notes on these verses in the New Testament Recovery Version are of tremendous help in understanding zoe. We’ll read just a few here. Note 5 of verse 1 explains the phrase Word of life: Dom: Woah! It’s alight! There she goes, slowly and steadily to the boat down there but what’s in the boat?

The alpha and omega symbols were made part of early Christianity. You will find them in early Christian paintings and sculptures, especially on the arms of the cross, and even in some jeweled crosses. The New Testament was originally written in Greek, a language richer than English in the diversity and complexity of its vocabulary. For example, there are three Greek words for life used in the New Testament: bios , psuche , and zoe. These words have different meanings, but they’re all translated into English as life. So if we want to know which meaning life has in a particular verse, we need to know which Greek word is being used. Merkle and Plummer have written a charming and immensely practical book on how to retain and even regain knowledge of Greek. I am thrilled to recommend this book, which so effectively instructs and motivates us to continue studying the Greek New Testament.

Let’s revisit John 10:10 by replacing the English word life with the original word zoe in this verse: Did you just get into the college of your dreams? Have you been hearing about the term 'Greek life' being thrown around here and there and are unaware of what is Greek Life? Let us help you out today as we are going to explain there is everything to know about Greek life! We will talk about the basic terms like fraternity and sorority to what they offer. Of course, you must have questions such as “What is a fraternity?” or “What is a sorority?” and we have prepared an extensive guide to introduce you to what is Greek life on campus. So, let us not waste any more time and dive right into it! What is Greek life? Many languages use a word meaning 'kisses'as a form of leave-taking convention, and 'filia' [filiaː]is exactly that in Greek. Contrary to what you may assume, it generally does not imply intimacy, even though you would obviously only say 'filia' to someone you know pretty well, be it at parting or before hanging up the phone. The 'cuter' version is 'filakia' (literally 'little kisses') which you'll more often than not here younger women saying. Pretty straight forward, but caution! Make sure you don't mix up the Greek word for 'kisses' with that for 'friendship' [filiːa]. That wouldn't make any sense as a parting expression. At all.Full of ideas, strategies, and anecdotes, one can't help but be encouraged in one's quest for Koine Greek acquisition. The book also has little boxed-quotes scattered along the text, and though these are Protestants, as far as what is quoted is related to the Greek texts of Scripture, the quotes are great and if anything that is said should make those Orthodox who decry the study of original languages blush with embarrassment. Possibly the most essential Greek phrase, and one of the most common Greek greetings, ‘yia sou’ [jaːsu]is an informal way of saying ‘hello’. What your Greek phrasebook probably won’t tell you though, is that ‘yia’ is a shortening for ‘iyia’[ijiːa], which means ‘health’ in Greek - i.e. you greet people by literally wishing them good health (isn't that the sweetest?). The slightly more polite version is ‘yia sas’ [jaːsas], which you probably want to use with strangers, older people, etc. Zoe refers to the uncreated, eternal life of God, the divine life uniquely possessed by God. A closer look at zoe Designed to accompany a beginning or intermediate Greek grammar, this book offers practical guidance, inspiration, and motivation; presents methods not usually covered in other textbooks; and surveys helpful resources for recovering Greek after a long period of disuse. It also includes devotional thoughts from the Greek New Testament. The book will benefit anyone who is taking (or has taken) a year of New Testament Greek.
